This is a simulation cockpit aka simpit (or home cockpit, or virtual cockpit) that I built myself and use to play flight and space simulators. Mostly I’m playing Star Citizen and getting into DCS. And occasionally doing more relaxed civilian aviation in Flight Simulator 2020.

The cockpit isn’t modelled after any specific aircraft but is a generic design with emphasis on fun: it needs to be a place where I can enjoy sitting for longer periods (if I ever have the time). It’s also modular so I can change some sections between different games.

I started building my first cockpit Fall 2021 with my previous Simpit 2.0 (you can read more about the legacy cockpit here in case you’re interested) and the latest Simpit 3.0 Summer 2022. You can also download the 3D model I used for my project here.

A project like this isn’t just about playing a game with it but as much about building it. Coming up with new interesting upgrades and learning new skills to implement them. For me, building this stuff is as fun as playing games with it.

We live in an older large building in relatively remote location where we have few extra rooms. This small room wasn’t used with anything so I got a permission to use it for my rig.

As you might imagine, my inspirations have been people like The Warthog Project (I don’t think I’ll ever get to that level of details, that project is just beyond amazing) and from Star Citizen side, Afterimage Flight, who has created really nice looking simpit with amazing details.

System

This probably doesn’t warrant its own page, but here are the specs of the PC I use. I built it myself around Christmas 2020 and have made few upgrades along the way.

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5800x3D with Fractal Design Celsius+ S24 Prisma cooler
  • GPU: Asus GeForce TUF-RTX4090-24G-GAMING
  • Motherboard: MSI MAG X570 Tomahawk WIFI
  • Memory: 32 Gb Corsair DDR4 3600 Mhz
  • Case: Corsair Crystal Series 570X RGB

And yes, of course there are Star Wars posters on the wall. I think it’s a legal requirement for a room like this. And a Drake poster since I wanted a Star Citizen poster there too.

Not anymore since after upgrading into a large screen, there’s no room for these and I’m having an existential crisis because I don’t know where I can fit them.

But at least Pico is stil there with me.

And I have Pico as my co-pilot.
